Begin with a gentle first wash
Wash new linens before their first use. Separate light and dark colors, unfold each piece fully and give everything room to move in the drum. An overfilled machine creates unnecessary friction and makes thorough rinsing more difficult.
Keep fine linens away from jeans, zippers and other rough or heavy garments. A dedicated linen load is a simple habit worth adopting.
Use less detergent, not more
Choose a mild liquid detergent without added bleach, whiteners or fabric softener. Measure carefully for your load and machine: extra detergent can leave residue rather than deliver a cleaner finish.
Add detergent through the dispenser instead of pouring it directly onto the fabric. Treat stains before washing, and avoid aggressive scrubbing around decorative details.
For the precise wash temperature and drying setting, use the care label sewn into each piece. Cotton fabric, embroidery and finishing details need to be considered together.
Keep towels soft and absorbent
Fabric softener can make a towel feel silky while reducing its ability to absorb water. Skip both liquid softener and dryer sheets.
Dry towels thoroughly before folding, without leaving them tumbling longer than necessary. Smooth them by hand and fold loosely. There is no need to iron terry towels.
Give embroidery extra attention
A white towel with colored stitching should not be treated like an undecorated white towel. Avoid bleach and whitening additives that can damage the embroidery as well as the cotton.
For embroidered bed linens that can be ironed, work from the reverse over a clean white towel. This supports the raised stitching rather than flattening it against the ironing board.
Finish bed linens with care
Shake out sheets and pillowcases before drying to loosen creases. Avoid excessive heat and over-drying, and remove pieces promptly at the end of the cycle.
If you enjoy a pressed finish, iron suitable bed linens while slightly damp. Let them dry completely before storing. For a more relaxed finish, smooth each piece by hand before folding.
Rotate, fold and store thoughtfully
Keep several sets in rotation so the same pieces are not constantly in use and in the wash. Three sets make a practical arrangement: one in use, one being laundered and one ready in the cupboard.
Store clean, completely dry linens in a ventilated space away from direct sunlight. Leave enough room to lift a set out easily instead of packing shelves tightly.

Should I use fabric softener on cotton towels?
No. Skip fabric softener and dryer sheets to help preserve absorbency. Use a mild detergent and avoid overdosing.
Can I bleach white towels with colored embroidery?
Avoid bleach and whitening additives on embroidered towels. The white cotton and colored stitching need to be cared for together.
Should I iron embroidered sheets and pillowcases?
If the piece is suitable for ironing, press while slightly damp. Iron embroidery from the reverse over a clean white towel to support the stitching. Terry bath towels do not need ironing.
